Bubblegum Bonus

Filed under: Thrifty Finds — Laura R @ 2:13 PM
Near me there are at least 4 communities having rummage sales this Saturday, each with at least 50 homes participating, 2 communities boasting closer to 150 homes open for rummagers.
The competition is tough, which should make prices and negotiating favorable to buyers.
Look at it another way, sellers may feel that if one person does not like their price chances are someone else may be willing to pay it.  With thousands of people out looking it could go either way.

This season it seems that more often than not garage sales are beginning late afternoons
(usually 4pm) on Thursday. You might call it a presale, but from the heavy traffic sales are experiencing, I see this trend paying off.  Most sellers are not willing to haggle over prices on Thursdays or even Friday mornings, but the selection is the best early in the sale.

You can imagine my surprise when on Friday afternoon I was able to buy this metal Carousel Bubblegum machine for $1.50.

 I did not even haggle.

Of course I won’t be chewing the gum.  (unknown age and source)
When I got  home  I decided to open the bottom.

Bubblegum Bonus

I had not even thought to open it at the sale and with the gum inside it rattled.

a small profit

After  totalling it up not only was the machine free but I can go out and shop some more on Saturday.

The coin in the middle is a 10 cent Euro.

(You know I was going to anyhow.)

Treasure Hunt Thursday

  1. I haven’t been yard saling in a while. I need to tame my clutter first before bringing anything new (used) into the house!

I have a gumball machine that I bought at a thrift shop last year to add to my daughter’s birthday decor, I didn’t get as good a deal as you did! Not even close! 🙂

  3. You just brought back some memories…my brother had a red bubblegum machine in his room and I was so envious. I’d try to sneak in his room and “buy” some gum, but he would usually foil my scheme.

  26. what a steal !!!
and i love bubble gum machines in houses….did you know you can use more than bubble gum inside it ? like hot tamales ? and one mom i know put marbles in hers and when the kids were good, she gave them money for marbles. then the marbles added up to big gifts when they collected enough….all from doing their chores and being good listeners 🙂

    • Great ideas! My friends have M&Ms in theirs but I was thinking of using it mainly for display. I thought about filling it with buttons or tiny glass ball ornaments. I will have to adjust it so nothing falls out if someone turns the handle.
