Yodeling Goat

Who remembers the goatherd song from The Sound of Music?
To refresh your memory play this video while you finish reading this post.

No, it’s not the original, but I felt this was more Farm Friendly.

Here are the words in case you’ve forgotten:

High on a hill was a lonely goatherd
Lay ee odl lay ee odl lay hee hoo
Loud was the voice of the lonely goatherd
Lay ee odl lay ee odl-oo

Folks in a town that was quite remote heard
Lay ee odl lay ee odl lay hee hoo
Lusty and clear from the goatherd’s throat heard
Lay ee odl lay ee odl-oo

O ho lay dee odl lee o, o ho lay dee odl ay
O ho lay dee odl lee o, lay dee odl lee o lay

A prince on the bridge of a castle moat heard
Lay ee odl lay ee odl lay hee hoo
Men on a road with a load to tote heard
Lay ee odl lay ee odl-oo
Men in the midst of a table d’hote heard
Lay ee odl lay ee odl lay hee hoo
Men drinking beer with the foam afloat heard
Lay ee odl lay ee odl-oo
One little girl in a pale pink coat heard
Lay ee odl lay ee odl lay hee hoo
She yodeled back to the lonely goatherd
Lay ee odl lay ee odl-oo
Soon her Mama with a gleaming gloat heard
Lay ee odl lay ee odl lay hee hoo
What a duet for a girl and goatherd
Lay ee odl lay ee odl-oo
Odl lay ee (odl lay ee)
Happy are they lay dee olay dee lee o . . .
. . . yodeling . . .
Soon the duet will become a trio
Lay ee odl lay ee odl-oo

Ahhh, they just don’t write songs like that any more.
Next time you hear this song you’ll find yourself joining in.

The reason I am reminding you is because we have been singing the Lonely Goatherd song a lot lately.   (The dogs and I have.)
Not  nearly as well as Julie Andrews.

(She was as hard to photograph as a real animal!)

This little puppet came home with me from a church sale.
A music voice box is in the mouth and when you move the lips she sings the Goatherd Song.  I wish I could let you hear it.  It makes my dogs bark  sing along.

Sorry- thunder and lightning. As much as I need a new computer, I can’t risk losing this one before I get a new one. Signing off for a bit.

  3. I agree the puppet could be Lampchops boyfriend! and now I will have this tune stuck in my head all week! LOL! (I oddly have this image in my head of you & the dogs dancing around the yard yodeling!)

  5. Thanks so much for leaving such kind comments on my blog. And glad you liked the cart! Although I’m not sure what I’m going to do with it either, I am going to try my hardest to make a practical use for it! I need to in order to justify keeping it :). And I think the puppet is great. Lately I’ve been listening to Pandora’s Disney channel and get so excited when songs from either Sound of Music or Mary Poppins come on.

  6. HILARIOUS!!!! I am cracking up over your little yodeling goat!!!!
The background music is making it even funnier. He is adorable and I imagine when the dogs chime in it is something to behold. Glad you brought him to THT!

  7. That just made my day! I don’t think I’ve ever seen the words to The Lonely Goatherd before. I really enjoyed reading through (and singing along in my head).

The puppet is so cute! Double cool that she sings the song, too. And having two dogs, I can imagine the cacophony once they “sing” with her.
