National Garage Sale Day? Who Knew!

Filed under: Thrifty Finds — Laura R @ 8:57 AM

Sorry- no pictures today. I have been out the past couple days thrifting, visiting other people’s yards and garages and barns and sheds and a few churchs.  Besides interesting plunder and some great books I was treated to good conversation and a wonderful bakery that brought back childhood memories.  Nope, no pictures of that either, it was yummy and gone fast.

How did I find out there was a National Garage Sale Day?
Thank you Ms. Selena  from  Apron Thrift Girl   who holds a fun Monday Meme  Thrift Share that I would love for all of you to join.  Don’t wait until Monday, please hop over to ATG now and read her post about National  Garage Sale Day.  She has a delightful and practical  gift for you there.

I promise there will be pictures after I finish unloading the van and sorting out my treasure.  Prepare to be amazed  (at what I will drag home.)

I am linking this post up to Frugalicious Friday  at Finding Fabulous where she has a post with details on another thrifty source – senior living centers.
Please go read it yourself.

Since this post is short I have room to send a shout out to all my classmates from high school.  I did visit with some of you at the pre reunion bar thing Friday night.  Still trying to get my hearing and voice back.

And to all my readers, if you have a favorite recipe from your childhood and want to send me a link, maybe with a brief story of your memories, I’d love to read it.

How do you find garage sales?
A few ways are local newspapers, on paper or online,   services such as CraigsList  or Garage Sale Finder  or local Saturday morning radio programs.

Anouncement:  There is a party going on at Under the Table and a prize for linking up to her Sunday Showcase so go add your project.

Happpy To Design  offers you a chance to repost one of your favorite posts on Sunday, and since I am reblogging ATG’s information, this is sort of a repost.

Kuzak’s Closet  has a contest for you  and an opportunity to share favorite things in your life.

I heart naptime  has a contest for you today as well.  Link up your project or just visit and see great things made by others and become inspired.

Linking this post up to Market Yourself at Sumo’s Sweet Stuff
Thrifty Treasures at Southern Hospitality (note- only 1 more month to join in this season)
Nifty Thrifty Tuesday at Coastal Charm
Twice Owned at House of Grace
Toot Your Horn at A Silly Little Sparrow
WordFULL Wednesday at 7 Clown Circus
Penny Pinching at The Thrifty Home   and a reminder of her Refinished Furniture link party   that you can still join and share.
Whatever Goes Wednesday at Someday Crafts   – also look at the great projects she recently share for her Back 2 School party.
Another Back to School Bash was held at Lizard & Ladybug  and presently she has an event planning type party. Go read for details.
And I am going to SPOTLIGHT myself at It’s So Very Cheri

Because going through other people’s stuff is a favorite past time of mine I am linking up to Favorite Things Saturday.

Urgent: Raffle Coming to Close: Doodlebug

As you know,  dogs are a big part of my life. One reason for that is the PEOPLE my dogs have allowed me to meet and interact with.

Those dog PEOPLE are an expanding family, and on February 1, 2010, our family expanded a tiny bit further.  Can something be tiny and HUGE at the same time?  Amy and Kenny Kistler welcomed a new addition to their family, Miss Allyson London Kistler.  The lovely Miss Ally was born after a rough experience, with 2 holes in her heart and Down Syndrome.  She weighed 4 lb, 5.6 oz.
In March,  Miss Ally underwent her first heart surgery.
The best news,  a week later she finally was able to go home with her parents, and was up to 5 lb, 11oz.

As you know, insurance only covers a portion of the medical costs involved with any birth and life preserving operations.  So members of Ally’s extended family have gotten together to offer up some WONDERFUL Raffle prizes to raise some additional funds for the Kistler family.

Coordinating the Raffle,  handling the prizes and collecting the money,  is the amazing Miss Susan,  of M and Z Gourmet Dog Cookies. (Named after Mollie and Zander.)

From her website/blog:  I’d like to propose a not-so-totally “Non-Newf” short-time fund-raiser raffle to help Amy & Kenny out with some of these expenses and thus show Ally’s entire family just how special their family is to the extended Newf ” family”

ALL PROCEEDS WILL GO TO A SPECIAL ACCOUNT SET UP FOR LITTLE ALLY.

Already we have some nice prizes donated and I suspect there will be more coming in….so here’s your chance to win a nice prize for yourself and your Puppers and also help little Ally.

There will be at least 1 huge prize package and maybe a second prize as well….So far:

2.5 lb Variety Pack M & Zee’s Treats ( Reg or Wheat Free ) – donated by my Pups

Embroidered Newf Hand Towels ( almost too pretty to use ) – donated by Sawyer Gilmer

Arayo Note Cards – donated by Karyn Carpenter & Arayo

Signed copy of Life Among the Giants donated by Bill & Ingrid Ball

Partylite Item – donated by Mary Kornowske-Mesce

Item from Enchanted Designs ( this is a surprise even to me ) – donated by Barbara Yerks

King Wubba Toy – donated by Buttercup Aspeotes ( who much prefers to gut her stuffies )

Newfie Journal – donated by Zander & Peggy Sue …. to help you docment all the happy, HAPPY times and memories in your Newf’s life.

From Suzi & Robert Bidwell….a 2010 Newf Gone BAD calendar and a deck of the Newf Playing cards that are being sold by Heart of America Newfoundland Club.

From Newf-L member….artist Christine Nelson has told me that she is donating a Custom made piece of Newfie Art to the Grand Prize winner

and as I said….there may be others coming in which I do not know about yet.
UPDATE: April 27. 2010                  YES – more prizes added!

Tickets will be $ 2.00 each or 3 for $ 5.00.

M & Zee’s will cover all shipping expenses for the prizes so again…

EVERYTHING COLLECTED GOES STRAIGHT TO ALLY…..

Since I am NOT permitted to take donations via PayPal ( BUMMER ) , tickets will have to be purchased with a check or money order.

You may either make your check out directly to Amy Kistler or if you feel comfortable, leave the Pay To area blank and all checks will be gathered together and forwarded to the Kistlers after the conclusion of this Raffle.

You may, however, e-mail me with the number of tickets you’d like and I will enter you into the spreadsheet and e-mail you back with your tickets numbers .

My e-mail is: landlubbernewf@yahoo.com

My mailing address is:

Susan Aspeotes
PO Box 62
Waynesville MO 65583

Please place Doodlebug on the lower corner of your envelope so I can get the entries processed right away.

I will take entries through the month of April and draw the winner(s) on May 1, 2o10. The winner(s) will be e-mailed and asked to confirm their mailing address so their prizes can be shipped out right away.

Please retweet this for me. We would love to see the totals rise and I know you will be thrilled with the wonderful prizes.

Review/Give Away: Country Bob’s All Purpose Sauce

Being a relatively new blogger you know I was super excited to be offered my first product to share with my readers.  And for it to be a great product that appeals to everyone was even more wonderful.
The label on the Original Country Bob’s  All Purpose Sauce  is colorful and informative.  The sauce is gluten free and has no products or byproducts that (I am fairly certain) vegetarians or vegans will object to.

Ingredients:  Tomato concentrate, (tomato paste and water), vinegar, corn syrup, sugar, molasses, salt, onion powder, caramel color, garlic powder, tamarind, corn starch, natural flavors, and other spices.

So even though many people think of this as a Barbequing or Meat Flavoring sauce,  Country Bob’s All Purpose Sauce is a tasty addition to vegetarian meals as well.  There are many recipes available to you on the Country Bob’s website, including a variation on Chex Party Mix

However – I did use my sample bottle of Country Bob’s All Purpose Sauce  on meat – pork to be specific.  Generally I prefer meat that is cooked on a grill, but in early March in Wisconsin,  if the temperatures are not a bit nippy,  the wind makes grilling outdoors a challenge.  I wanted to do this right.  So here is a picture to prove to you that I did indeed make the chops myself.

Two of the chops I had marinated in the sauce beforehand,  and two I lightly drizzled with sauce, just in case the flavor was too intense for me.  Tasting it straight from the bottle I found it to be sweet and tangy.

Well, I had nothing to be worried about. Country Bob’s All Purpose Sauce added something special to the meat and I did dip the less treated portions into more sauce during the meal.

We ate our delicious meal too quickly for me to get an actual picture of presentation,
but imagine it to look something like this

except I made steak fries and frozen, bagged green beans.
But it was delicious and there were no leftovers.
There was one comment that next time we should try the Country Bob’s Spicy All Purpose  Sauce.
To find where Country Bob’s products (including  Seasoning Salt) are sold, visit the website.

As excited as I was to be able to try The Original Country Bob’s  All Purpose Sauce  myself,  I am even more enthusiastic about being able to offer to you a chance to have Country Bob’s sauce delivered directly to your door.  Al, from  Country Bob’s, has graciously offered 2 readers a 2 bottle sample.  Did I mention I was  impressed that the botttles came packed in recycled materials?

To win,  please visit Country Bob’s website, come back here and leave a comment with something you learned.

For an extra entry, leave a comment with the name of a recipe you’d like to try using a Country Bob’s product.

I will also give a chance if you let me know you have commented on any of my other posts.

And I will give you 2 entries if you tell me how you heard about this contest or how you found my blog.   (leave 2 comments, please)

OK- I said I was new at this. Suppose you want to know when the winners (yes two winners) will be chosen.  I will allow comments toward winning through April 3  and choose  winners on Sunday April 4,  to post soon after.
